Independent Voices is an open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.

Non-profit collective dedicated to providing access to and increasing public awareness of the alternative press.

Subscription database available to CWSL community for major U.S. and international newspapers and newswires with indexes and many full-text sources. For historic articles, we recommend filtering by date and publication (if known).

The California Digital Newspaper Collection contains over 1,500,000 pages of significant historical California newspapers published from 1846-present, including the first California newspaper, the Californian, and the first daily California newspaper, the Daily Alta California. It also contains issues of several current California newspapers that are part of a project to preserve and provide access to contemporary papers.

Library of Congress list of open and paywalled sources for historic newspapers. The Library of Congress also maintains a collection of digitized newspapers from 1777-1963 and a directory of newspapers published in the U.S. since 1690 at Chronicling America.

Featured in Smithsonian Magazine, the University of Arizona digital collection includes publications from Tucson, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sonora, Mexico, from the mid–1800s to the 1970s. The newspapers, written in English or Spanish, contain primary source information on 19th– and 20th–century life in Texas, Arizona, California, and Mexico.

The Hub contains geographically and culturally diverse newspapers published between 1849 and today, including historic Native newspapers.

Extensive collection of digital scans of historic local and regional newspapers. Full text searching is suboptimal due to poor optical character recognition (OCR). After locating a newspaper, we recommend browsing by date instead of using keywords. A good place to look before paying for an authenticated version through a subscription service.
